about

eMERGENCY heARTS Records is proud to join forces with Mic Crenshaw for the release of his new single, ep, and music video.

One half Hip Hop, one half hardcore punk, Crenshaw is just being himself on Born to Fight - the first single from his recently released rock ep entitled Black Skinhead. Mic has combined Hip Hop, social justice activism, and popular education for most of his life in order to honor his passions as an artist, activist, and educator.

Crenshaw teamed up with Agyei Marshall in 2018, who provided the technical musicianship which established the unmistakable and distinctly heavy tone of the song. Mic and Agyei then enlisted the support of Ian Westmorland to visually encapsulate a dystopian theme to match the timeless, dark awareness expressed in Crenshaw’s lyrics. Westmorland captures striking imagery in the music video for Born To Fight, using street art, movement, and lighting in the eerily vacant streets of pandemic Portland.

Crenshaw's lyrical integrity is a reflection of his values which have been shaped by his grassroots organizing. Mic has been engaged in liberatory work since his youth and co-founded the Minneapolis Baldies and Anti Racist Action as a Black skinhead. The lyrics to Born to Fight were written in the immediate wake of a near-death incident where a good friend of Crenshaw's, Micah Fletcher, was stabbed in the neck in an incident in which two other men were murdered in a racist attack on a Portland, Oregon commuter train in 2017. As Crenshaw reflected on Micah's sacrifice, he was inspired by the history of commitment to anti-racist fighting and organizing that had defined so much of his social consciousness.

This collaboration with eMERGENCY hEARTS proceeds Crenshaw’s forthcoming book, which is also titled Black Skinhead and recounts Crenshaw’s days as an anti-racist, anti-fascist street fighter and his subsequent development into a Cultural Activist.
